Abstract
This article will examine the Papua’s terminology and other previous terminologies used to describe this province. Previous terminologies used to describe the people of Papua will also be investigated. The writer will examine those terminologies from their historical, etymological, cultural, sociological and political background. Based on the research, the writer comes to the conclusion that Papua is the precise name for this province.
Konflik Elit Lokal dalam Pembentukan Provinsi Irian Jaya Barat

Abstract
The aim of this article is to explain how local elites responded the establishment of West Papua Province, based on Act No. 45/1999. Those elites consisted of supporter and contra groups having the differently social bases. The supporters are mainly local government, local parliament, and local ethnics elites. The contra groups mostly come from civil society elements such as NGOs and the Churches. Several factors to explain the idea of the new province seen from the supporter’s point of view are to shorten of span of control of the government, to create people welfare (mainly indigeneous people), to get bureaucracy and political positions, to maintain national integration, and to protect Manokwari as a historical city and the centre of Papua civilization.
Conversely, the contra groups argued that the establishment of West Papua Province has been no constitutional foundation and had excluded the public from the decision making process of the pemekaran. The central goverment intervention can cause local conflicts and human right abuses, destroy Papua nationalism and invite protests from international communities. So, conflict resolution can be as follow: 1) Revision to the Act No. 45/1999 and No. 21/2000; 2) Building dialogues and reconciliation: between central and Papua government, between Papua and West Papua government, and between pro-and contra groups in West Papua.

Abstract
For decades the people of West Papua have been suffering blatant human rights abuses (imprisonment, torture, extrajudicial executions and "disappearances") at the hands of the Indonesian military. Government from Habibie to Megawati have no different approach than New Order Rezim. Freeport McMoran Copper and Gold since 1967 have been playing a role in West Papua to mine for copper of land belonging to the indigenous Amungme people. Yet, to date, the company has no policy of commitment or royalty distribution to the local community. Relationship between Freeport and the Indonesian government is one of mutual gain at the expense of the people and resources of West Papua. For Freeport, the West Papua operations are literally a gold mine, and with the taxes tossed at the elites in Jakarta; the Indonesian government even offers the services of its military to ensure smooth operation.
The Role of Women in Sweetpotato Conservation: A Study of the Dani People in Balliem Valley, West Papua, Indonesia

“Orang Dani” adalah sebutan bagi kelompok masyarakat adat (indigenous peoples) yang mendiami daerah Lembah Balim di Kabupaten Jayawijaya, Propinsi Papua, Indonesia. Dalam kepustakaan kelompok ini seringkali dibagi ke dalam dua bagian, yaitu “Dani Lembah Balim” dan “Dani Barat”, yang mendiami dua sistem ekologi yang berbeda. Kelompok Dani Lembah Balim tinggal di daerah basah, sedangkan Dani Barat di daerah perbukitan. Tetapi keduanya masih mempertahankan tradisi menanaman ubi jalar (Ipomea batatas, sp) sebagai makanan pokok, sehingga daerah ini dikenal sebagai penyumbang sumber daya genetika yang kaya untuk varietas ubi jalar. Tulisan ini didasarkan pada suatu survey cepat di sembilan lokasi masyarakat Dani, yang didanai oleh CIP-ESEAP pada tahun 1999. Ditemukan lebih dari seratus varietas ubi jalar untuk penggunaan yang berbeda, yaitu sebagai makanan pokok, makanan bayi, makanan ternak babi dan tanaman obat. Dari sisi pembagian kerja secara seksual, peranan perempuan dalam upaya konservasi keragaman varietas ubi jalar ini sangat signifikan. Hal ini berkaitan pula dengan pembagian kerja secara tradisional yang menempatkan perempuan Dani dalam pekerjaan-pekerjaan yang berhubungan dengan penanaman, pemeliharaan dan perlakukan paska panen. Pekerjaan-pekerjaan itu memberi peluang kepada perempuan Dani untuk mengetahui lebih baik daripada orang-orang lain dalam komunitasnya, khususnya mengenai karakteristik varietas tanaman, perlakuaan agronomis, syarat-syarat biofisik yang dibutuhkan, seperti jenis tanah. Demikian halnya dengan rasa dan penggunaan varietas-varietas itu. Beberapa informan bahkan menemukan varietas-varietas baru secara tidak sengaja di kebun. Tetapi, keanekaragaman varietas ini sedang mengalami tantangan yang berat, karena adanya introduksi sistem pertanian dari luar dan masalah kelaparan. Dengan posisinya sebagai “pengawal” keanekaragaman hayati yang penting, maka program yang berkaitan dengan pemberdayaan dan pengembangan kapasitas pengetahuan perlu diprioritaskan untuk perempuan Dani.
Orientasi Budaya dalam Membangun Manusia Papua yang Majemuk: Tinjauan Antropologi

Pluralism in Papua can be seen from different ethnic groups, languages, religious and culture of its society. This pluralism often leads to difficulties in decision making on the development of appropriate programs in this province, causing inefficiency in budget and labor workers. Therefore, the Papua people feel they are being neglected by the government. This article describes the ethnic pluralism and culture, focusing on the general characteristict of the society.
